褪せた制度的オレンジ色に塗られた出入口のアーチが、公道と向こう側の何らかの形式的な空間との境界を示す—この敷居を通り過ぎる者に秩序と目的を約束するといった種類のしきい。Spanish mossで覆われたライブオークは車道の上に自然の大聖堂を形成し、その枝は非常に重く低く、舗装面をかすめんばかりである。これはAmerican Southの特徴であり、1950年代までに、政府や教会や学校が運営する場所の視覚的なありきたりのものとなっていた。そこでは木々は古くなったまま放置され、誰も枝を切らなかった。門の両側の看板は小さすぎてここからは読めない。それが正確に問題なのである。その場所は十分に壮大に身を現して標識を要求するが、それが実際に何であるかを説明するほど明確ではない。誰かはこの出入口が制度的尊厳について何か重要なことを述べていると信じていた。
The historian's note
建築学的および景観的要素—Spanish mossを備えたライブオーク、制度的アーチ、20世紀半ばの塗装された標識、および車道の幾何学的性質—は1940年代から1960年代の南部の教育、政府、または宗教施設と一致している。カラースライドストックと彩度は20世紀半ばの透明フィルムを示唆している。景観的特性としてのライブオークの樹冠はフロリダからカロライナ州およびメキシコ湾岸の州にかけての制度的敷地では一般的であり、そこでは木々は保守を必要とせず、歴史的な重みを伝えた。アーチ自体は景観から独立して塗装され維持管理されており、分離の時代と直後に典型的な制度的アイデンティティ標識の時代的詳細である。
