1960年代、誰かが尾根の上に立ってカメラを構え、地面の穴に向けた。進歩は傷のように見えたとしても、文書化する価値があるという理論からだった。下方には、掻き出された土の淡色の盛り土が樹木の間に瘢痕組織のように置かれており、周囲の森がその差を単純に吸収すると想定した砂利採掘または採石操業の残骸である。
当時、誰もが50年後にその採掘場がどのように見えるかを尋ねることを考えなかった。なぜなら1960年代には、人々がタバコと鉛ペイントを扱うのと同じ無頓着な方法で、土地はいまだに再生可能資源として扱われていたからである。採掘は中距離で忍耐強く、地味に続いており、その背後の丘々はこのすべてが自分たちに関係ないかのように緑を保っている。
写真家はそれを風景として枠付けした。そしてそれはほぼ風景であるが、風景の半分は機械製造されたものである。それは写真に埋め込まれた静かなジョークである。通常は山々のために予約されている同じ敬意で撮影された産業副産物である。
