マドローダムは入園料を払う来園者にとって決して古くならない、ただ一つのジョークで成り立っている。教会の塔ほどの背丈をした大人たちが、1：25の縮尺で造られたオランダを歩き回り、跨ぎ越せるような跳ね橋を厳粛に検査している。1960年代の観光客は、聖堂や峡谷のように小さく感じるために来たのではない。巨大に感じるために来たのだ。これはより稀な感覚であり、ギルダーの価値がある。
暗いスーツを着た男が小さな市庁舎広場を横切る。ミニチュアの町議会との会議に遅刻したかのような足取りで。自分の影だけで一つの地区を暗くしてしまうという事実には全く気がついていない。彼の周りでは、最良の観光着を身につけた家族連れがカメラを庭のこびとより背の低い塔に向け、門の外で待っている本物よりも完璧で、よりよく保存されている形で存在する国を記録している。
赤いシャツを着た少年が小さな岸壁に沿って走る。建物が実は実物大かもしれず、自分がただ非常に大きく成長したのだと信じるほど若い、公園全体で唯一の来園者である。その他の誰もが縮尺と折り合いをつけ、その傍らで写真を撮られるというより深刻なビジネスに進んでいる。
