1960年代のある人物は、市営の花壇を軍事パレードさながらの精密さで配置すべきだと決めたらしく、その結果がこの、曲線を描くチューリップの列と刈り込まれた低木の配置であり、杭や標識のひとつひとつが、来場者に展示を踏まないよう伝えるという小さな官僚的職務を果たしている。木々の背後にそびえる建物は、双子の鐘塔と急勾配のスレート屋根を持ち、ホテルであれ、療養所であれ、大学であれ、施設というものが今世紀を生き延びるつもりであるかのように自らを建てていた時代に属している。
ここでの庭師の野心は、控えめでありながら徹底したものだった――何ひとつ野生的に見えることを許さない公共空間である。すべての生垣は同じ形に丸められ、すべての花壇は同じきっちりとした弧に切り取られている。これは、自然が明らかに議論の末に従わされているときにこそ、人はより自然を楽しむのだという前提に立つ、園芸上の規律である。
フレームの中には誰もいないが、それがこの写真の意図だったのだろう。庭師たちがちょうど作業を終え、まだ来場者がその効果を乱す機会を得ていない日に、庭園が最も整然とした状態を示すために撮影されたのである。
