The historian's note

溝は集中した水流によって形成された深く侵食された水路であり、典型的には乾燥地または半乾燥地域で生じ、過放牧、森林破壊、保護性植生被覆を除去する不適切な耕作慣行などの人間活動によって悪化する。これらは土壌侵食の進行段階を表しており、著しい土地劣化につながる。

1970年代には、環境への関心が高まり、土地管理と保全慣行への懸念がアメリカ合衆国と世界的に広がり始めていた。この時期は、侵食プロセスの科学的研究の増加と、特に脆弱な風景における土壌保全戦略の発展を見た。

このような深い溝の存在は、長い水流出と土壌不安定性の歴史を示唆し、生態的に敏感な地域における自然資源管理の永続的な課題を強調している。このような特徴は、局所的な水文を大きく変化させ、農業生産性に影響を与え、生態系を破壊する可能性がある。
