この写真を撮った人物が誰であれ、1950年代に平坦で半乾燥の風景へと赴いたのは、何もない場所の上に昇る月が記録に値するという考えからだった。土地そのものは何も提供しなかった――建物もなく、道もなく、人もなく、ただ地平線と空という幾何学的事実があるのみだった。中景に一本の木がその平坦さを断ち切っていたが、それは他に見るべきものが何もないときに現れる、あの孤独な目印の類だった。写真家は澄んだ空に浮かぶ上昇する月を狙い、その円盤自体に露出を合わせた結果、それは青い虚空に浮かぶ明るい白い標的として写っている。この構図全体は空虚さに依存しており、光さえ適切で瞬間さえ澄んでいれば、空虚さが見る者の注意を引き留めうるという前提の上に成り立っている。

The historian's note

1950年代のアメリカ内陸部を写したカラー風景写真は、カラースライドフィルムの技術的成熟と、戦後の国内の広大な土地を記録したいという欲求を反映していた。半乾燥の放牧地あるいは高原と思われる場所で撮られたこの光景は、当時のドキュメンタリー的手法を特徴づけるものである。すなわち、写真家は無人の土地に赴き、見晴らしの利く地点を見つけ、人物も建造物も意味の拠り所として存在しない中で、自然光と地形の交差を記録した。昇る月が唯一の被写体となったのは、それがこの風景の広大さに対抗しうる唯一のものだったからである。木一本と月以外は何もないという、これほど禁欲的な光景を撮るという選択は、資源としても抽象としても西部の風景に向けられたこの時代の美的関心を反映している。
