On the image

広い湾を見下ろすツンドラの上に、三軒の小さな家が寄り添っている。それぞれ、北方の共同体が単調さへの対抗策として身につけた鮮やかな色に塗られている。中央の最も大きな家は黒ずんで風化しており——人が住むという営みを吸収してきたことがうかがえる。それを挟む二軒、黄色と淡い青に白い縁取りの家は、より新しいか、少なくともより手入れが行き届いているように見える。ちょうど家族が台所は摩耗するに任せつつ、応接間だけは見栄えよく保つのと同じように。その背後には水が水平線まで平坦に広がり、土地自体もほとんど海抜と変わらぬ高さで、この集落が春の雪解けと再び氷が戻る季節との間の束の間の窓の中にのみ存在していることを示唆している。建物群は木々を育てる土のない砂利の上に建ち、あるのは低い灌木と草だけ——この土地は、肥沃さや風よけのために人々が選んだ場所ではないことを、何の異論もなく認めている。

The historian's note

1950年代のカナダ北部沿岸集落は、自給自足と輸送の狭間に位置し、しばしば漁業活動、罠猟師、あるいは当時拡大しつつあった北極主権パトロール網の中継地点として機能していた。建築様式——雪を落とすよう設計された切妻屋根を持つ小さな木造枠組みの家屋——は、戦後の標準化された政府住宅政策を反映しており、この政策は入植者を季節的な野営地ではなく恒久的な居住地へと押しやるものであった。水域とツンドラ植生は、亜北極圏または低北極圏、おそらくNorthwest Territories、Yukon、あるいは各州の北部沿岸に位置することを示している。こうした集落は、航空輸送と近代的な補給網によって次第に無用のものとされつつあった一方で、連邦政府の政策は、係争中の北方地域に対するカナダの管轄権を主張する手段として、その定住を奨励し続けていた。
