1970年代に人々がしていたことの一つは、山を見に大距離を運転して行き、そこに立って山を見つめることだった。時には数分間、見つめていることもあった。一方、山はこの激しい観察によって変わることはなく、人類が内燃機関や展望台を発明する前の何千年も前からそのままだった。
その儀式は、小さなカメラのファインダーに最大限の風景を収めることだった。しばしば前景に戦略的に配置されたいくつかの樹を取り入れ、スケール感を出すため、あるいは単に樹の間に立っていたことを証明するためだった。これはしばしば樹が想定以上に目立つようになり、フレームに対する独自の主張を示していた。
