On the image
One of the things people did in the 1970s was drive great distances to look at mountains, then they would stand there and look at them, sometimes for minutes at a time. The mountain, for its part, remained unchanged by this intense scrutiny, just as it had for millennia before humans invented internal combustion engines and scenic overlooks.
The ritual was to frame the largest possible view in a small camera viewfinder, often incorporating a few strategically placed trees in the foreground to provide a sense of scale, or perhaps to simply prove that one was standing among trees. This often resulted in the trees becoming much more prominent than intended, asserting their own claim to the frame.
It was an era where the act of pointing a camera at something vast and beautiful was its own reward, a testament that you had been there and experienced the scale of nature, even if the resulting photograph only captured a fraction of the grandeur, mostly obscured by dark conifers.
The historian's note
This image depicts Clements Mountain, a prominent peak in Glacier National Park, Montana, likely viewed from a location along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The mountain is characterised by its distinctive snow-capped summit and the visibly layered sedimentary rock formations that comprise its slopes, characteristic of the Belt Supergroup geology found throughout the park.
During the 1970s, Glacier National Park was a popular destination for American tourists, with increasing visitation driven by the accessibility provided by the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which traverses the park. Photography of scenic vistas like Clements Mountain was a common activity, documenting the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
The image captures the park's rugged alpine landscape during a period when environmental consciousness was growing, influencing public appreciation for protected wilderness areas like Glacier National Park.
