Arlington の衛兵たちは規則で定められた正確な歩数で交替を執行している。数十年前、誰かが悲嘆は振り付けされた方がよく見えると判断したからである。兵士が肩に銃を持ったまま黒いマットの上を歩き、別の兵士が硬直して立っている。その二人とも、ロープの向こう側から六フィート離れたところで押し寄せている群衆を認識することはない。尊厳というのは観客がいないふりをすることを要求するという理論に基づいている。
一方、観客たちは同等の真摯さでコダックとハンドバッグと小さな子どもたちを握りしめている。かつて厳粛な公開行事のために人々が着用していたように、手袋、ハイヒール、帽子で身を包んでいる。あたかも墓廟がカジュアルな衣装によって不快感を感じるかのように。赤いスカートの女性と暗いサングラスをかけた男性が、三十分ごとに同じに繰り返される瞬間を写真に収めるために身を乗り出している。毎日、一日中。
彼らが目撃しているのは実際には終わることのない衛兵交替であり、天候や式典の有無、また誰かが見ているかどうかに関わらず、二十四時間体制で維持される名誉である。観光客たちは十五分刻みで出入りする。しかし儀式は彼らとは異なり、ほかに行く場所がない。
