途切れることなく続く針葉樹林が遠い尾根まで広がる景観—20世紀半ばにおいて無限の木材と、供給が限界なしという無思慮な前提を象徴する風景である。この写真フレームは、森林官や木材会社が風景保全ではなく労働資源として認識していたもの、すなわち各渓谷を埋め尽くす密集したダグラスモミとトウヒの林分を、わずかな集落が立つ伐採跡地ごと捉えている。色彩の飽和度と淡いかすみはコダクロームフィルムを示唆しており、その楽観的な色調パレットはアメリカの風景を国立公園のパンフレットから抜け出したかのように見せていた—それが実は撮影の目的の一部だった。これが環境運動が人々に異なる倫理観で森林を撮影することを教える前の、Pacific Northwestの姿である。

The historian's note

Cascade Range と太平洋岸北西部の沿岸森林は、1920年代から1980年代を通じて商業的な伐採を支配していた。高標高地から未伐採の木材を眺めるこの景観は、第二次世界大戦後の森林管理・収穫計画の拡大期における木材資源の標準的な記録を表している。1935年に導入され1950年代までに広く採用されたコダクロームカラープロセスは、ここに見られる飽和色再現を生み出し、米国の林業、観光、政府機関における風景記録の標準となった。伐採跡地と谷底でのみ中断される森林冠層の密度と均一性は、20世紀半ばの太平洋岸北西部流域に典型的な、原生林と二次林の混在を反映している。1960年代までに、同様の景観は新興の保全運動の中心となり、資源調査から脅かされた景観への再解釈が行われた。
