誰かの父親が、ポーズの合間を捉えた写真だ。カメラは少年が正面を向く半秒前に構えられており、その結果がその十年に撮られた礼装のポートレートより長く生き残ることになった写真となった。髪型が語ることは多い。両側と後ろは短く、こめかみのところで頭皮が見える——アメリカの理髪店が少年たちに与えるのが当然視されていた標準的な刈り込みで、頼むか頼まないかは関係なく、毛髪そのものを月ごとに矯正すべき軽微な性格欠陥と見なすという理論に基づいていた。
背後には近所が曖昧で平凡な輪郭を保つ——フェンスの線、屋根、数年前に急速に同一に建設された土地分割の平坦な幾何学。これらのものは被写体として意図されたものではなく、それゆえ記録として生き残るのだ。車道、フェンスのスタイル、戦後の郊外を埋め尽くしていた低い牧場風住宅——誰もが意図的に写真に撮ろうと考える前のもの。
少年は画面外の何かで笑顔の途中であり、記録されることに無頓着だ。このような態度は、画像に向けられたすべてのカメラがパフォーマンスを期待するようになるまで、この十年の子どもたちにはまだ可能なことだった。
The historian's note
この光景は1960年代に典型的なアメリカの郊外住宅地を記録したもので、背景に見える低いスロープの屋根線とフェンス構造によって識別可能であり、1940年代後期から1960年代までにアメリカ合衆国全土に建設された戦後の一括住宅開発と一致している。
