20世紀半ばのある時点で、一人の人物が輸入されたヤシの木に囲まれた人工的なラグーンで長い脚を持つ水鳥を見学する楽しみを一般大衆に提供すれば良いと考え、その判断は完全に間違っていなかった。このデザインはルーズベルト時代の純粋な楽観主義である:浅いプール、手入れされた植生、遠くにある東屋、そして人間が眺めるために配置された自然は改善された自然という暗黙の仮定。フラミンゴとサギは飼育鳥類特有のその不思議な静止状態に立っており、逃げるでもなく近づくでもなく、他の誰かが彼らの周りに描いた空と水の額縁の中に単に存在している。この構成は造園予算は持つが動物福祉を哲学として深刻に考えない公的機関を示唆している—これは展示であり、生息地ではなく、これが全体的な目的であることは誰もが理解していた。

The historian's note

アメリカの動物園と公園は第二次世界大戦後に劇的に拡大し、自動車文化と郊外家族の余暇支出によって推進された。外来鳥野鳥舎は特徴的な見どころとなり、フラミンゴやサギのような温暖地帯種が生態学的忠実性よりも訪問者の視線のために設計されたオープンウォーターの檻に収容された。ヤシで囲まれたラグーン配置は温暖州の公園、特にフロリダと南カリフォルニアに現れ、そこではオープンエア環境を通じて支援する気候で1年中半自然主義的な屋外設定が可能だった。Audubon Societyおよび同等の機関はそのようなコレクションを公教育と野生動物スペクタクルの両方として維持し、世紀半ばになると飼育に対する態度が変わり始めるまで続いたハイブリッド使命である。
