誰かが車を止めたのは、木々の葉が色づき、水面が一枚のフィルムを費やす価値があるように見えたからだ。これがこの時代の新しいカラースライドフィルムの一連の儀式だった――紅葉が見頃を迎えるまで車を走らせ、眺めの良い最初の待避所で停まり、あとはKodachromeに任せる。たいていはうまくいった。だからこそ、今も多くの屋根裏部屋に、誰も名前を思い出せない湖のスライドカルーセルが眠っている。
手前は季節に枯れゆく水草でびっしり覆われている。ファインダー越しに気づいていれば、アマチュア写真家なら切り取っていたはずの乱雑なディテールだが、彼の視線は対岸に向いていた。水の向こうの木々は、十月にすべきことをまさにその通りにこなしている――カメラを持つ意味を一年のうち二週間だけ正当化する、あの色を保ちながら。
道もなく、小屋もなく、人もいない。ただ、十分に美しい湖にはそれ以上の説明など要らないという確信だけがある。彼にとってはそうだった。今はもう、そうではない。
