誰かが樹木限界線より上の緩い崩積土の尾根に立ち、山が山のすることをしている写真を撮った。つまり何もしない、ゆっくり、非常に長い時間をかけて。眼前の裸の山頂は、12000年前に去ったそのまま説明も何もくれなかった氷河の特徴的な傷跡を示し、一方その下にある樹木で覆われた圏谷は、氷が去る際に穴を埋めるのを忘れたからこそ存在する小さな湖を抱いている。
1960年代、これは樹木限界線上の天候に関するいくつかの掲示された警告を無視することで登山者が獲得する種類の眺望だった。良い登山靴を持つ人間は高山物理学の法則から免除されるという理論のもとで。尾根下のクルムホルツと低木は、樹木が風と議論することをやめて横に成長し始めた正確な標高を示している。登山者はおそらくそれを記し、撮影し、夕食までに忘れた。
1965年、Katahdinであることを知るのに説明文は必要なかった。ただ肺いっぱいの空気と機能するカメラがあればよかった。一方、山はこれまでどちらも一度も必要としたことがない。
