淡い色の石灰岩の岩屑からなる急峻なタラス斜面が鋭い角度で下り、まばらな針葉樹と低木がその岩の上でどうにか足がかりを得た場所に点在している。左側には成木の一群—樹皮の淡さからしてアスペンかコットンウッドと思われる—がこの斜面が提供する唯一の遮蔽物となっており、その深い根は、ここで何か大きなものが生き延びられるという考えへの反証となっている。これは、一見すると荒涼として見えるが、それでも生命がいかに執拗にそこへ入り込んでいくかに気づくと印象が変わる、高地特有の地質である。瓦礫に押し込まれた小さな植物、岩と土が接する境界に立つ木々、いずれも根を張り続けるために必要最小限の仕事をこなしている。澄んだ空とくっきりとした陰影は晩夏を示唆しており、下方から斜面を見上げるという構図は、1950年代に登山者やハイカーが採用していた典型的な視点である。当時、カメラを携行することが山行の一部となっていた。この光景は純然たる頑固さとして読み取れる—カメラを手にした人々が、立ち止まって観察するための時間と装備をようやく手に入れたことで、山肌の特有の質感に気づくようになったのだ。

The historian's note

高山のタラス斜面と混交針葉樹の縁辺部は、北ロッキー山脈の高標高帯、特に石灰岩の岩屑が森林の縁と接する森林限界の移行部より上に典型的に見られる。この種の地形—先駆植生を伴う緩んだ石灰質岩屑—はGlacier National ParkやモンタナのMission Mountainsで広範に見られる。1950年代、カラースライドフィルムの登場により、こうした高地の光景は、戦後の余暇登山とワイルダネス観光の急増の一翼を担っていたアマチュア登山家や公園来訪者によって記録・収集されるようになった。この特定の植生パターンと斜面角度は、北ロッキー山脈地域における標高7,000から9,000フィートの範囲と一致している。
