On the image

The historian's note

この画像は、この頂点捕食者の特徴的な行動である、水に部分的に沈んだアメリカンワニ(Alligator mississippiensis)を描いている。写真は1970年代にさかのぼり、1960年代後期に制定された連邦保護により、ワニの個体群が大幅に回復していた時期である。

これらの大きな爬虫類は米国南東部が原産地であり、湿地、川、湖、沼地に生息している。絶滅の危機から回復したことは、野生動物保全努力における大きな成功と考えられている。

1970年代には、特にFlorida、Louisiana、Georgiaなどの州において、その自然生息地でのワニとの遭遇が観光客と住民にとってますます一般的になり、これらの地域のエコツーリズムの発展に貢献した。
