Qualcuno ha costruito questa cosa da solo, qui fuori, senza un ufficio permessi con cui discutere. Un rozzo cavalletto in legno giace semisommerso nella corrente, legato alla riva da un cavo che sparisce tra gli abeti, il tipo di struttura che un trapper o un cercatore d'oro placer metteva insieme perché il negozio di ferramenta più vicino era a un volo di idrovolante di distanza.

Nell'entroterra dell'Alaska negli anni '60, un uomo con una motosega e un po' di cavo era il proprio ufficio tecnico, e nessuno controllava i suoi calcoli prima che lo facesse il fiume. La struttura sembra costruita apposta per qualcosa di specifico, un supporto per ruota da pesca, una zattera a cavo, un'ancora da dragaggio, e quale che fosse, è stata giudicata sufficiente dal solo ispettore che contasse, cioè se sopravviveva al disgelo.

La foresta dietro non se ne cura in ogni caso. Abeti neri e betulle costeggiano fiumi come questo da più tempo di quanto chiunque abbia costruito cose destinate a galleggiarvi sopra, e resteranno in piedi anche dopo che questa particolare struttura sarà marcita, si sarà insabbiata ed sarà diventata una storia di cui nessuno ricorda bene i dettagli.
