Ha trovato l'unico lembo di sabbia non ostruito dalle rose di macchia e lo ha rivendicato per la macchina fotografica, seduta con le gambe ripiegate di lato in un abito a pois dalla gonna ampia, scelto chiaramente non per la comodità di sedersi su una duna. La borsetta bianca resta stretta in grembo per tutto il tempo, perché una donna di quel decennio non posava semplicemente la borsa sulla sabbia fidandosi che il mondo si comportasse bene.

L'acconciatura è a posto, gli orecchini abbinati, la cintura stretta, e nulla di tutto ciò è stato scomposto dal vento che soffiava dall'acqua alle sue spalle. Era la disciplina silenziosa dell'epoca: uno scatto di vacanza restava pur sempre una piccola apparizione pubblica, e ci si vestiva per essa come se l'oceano stesso potesse prendere appunti.

Alle sue spalle, le rose rugose fanno ciò che fanno sempre su una duna costiera, tenendo insieme la sabbia che le si fotografi o no, indifferenti al fatto che, per un pomeriggio, siano state soltanto lo sfondo di un bell'abito.
