She has found the one patch of sand not blocked by beach roses and claimed it for the camera, sitting with her legs tucked sideways in a full-skirted polka-dot dress that was clearly not chosen for practical dune-sitting. The white handbag stays clutched in her lap the whole time, because a woman of this decade did not simply set her purse down in the sand and trust the world to behave.
The hairstyle is set, the earrings match, the belt is cinched, and none of it was undone by wind coming off the water behind her. That was the quiet discipline of the era: a holiday snapshot was still a small public appearance, and you dressed for it as if the ocean itself might be taking notes.
Behind her the rugosa roses do what they always do on a coastal dune, holding the sand together whether or not anyone photographs them, indifferent to the fact that for one afternoon they were merely the backdrop to a good dress.
