Qualcuno ha deciso che questo tratto di ghiaia e abete rosso aveva bisogno di una casa di Dio, e ne ha costruita una in scala con l'ambizione piuttosto che con la popolazione. La cappella è appena più grande di una rimessa, ma ha un campanile vero e proprio, una croce, due finestre rotonde, e una mano di vernice abbastanza brillante da essere vista dalla strada, perché la fede, nel Nord degli anni Sessanta, credeva ancora nell'attrazione della strada.

Nessuna congregazione è visibile, nessuna macchina, nessun sentiero consumato nell'erba, solo l'edificio in piedi al centro di un lotto di ghiaia sgombrato per lui e nulla più. Una seconda struttura, più antica, siede ben indietro tra gli alberi, il tipo di capanna sobria che suggerisce che chiunque si occupasse di questa cappella viveva abbastanza vicino da sentirla se qualcuno bussasse.

È la sicurezza del gesto che colpisce più duramente: qualcuno ha osservato la foresta vuota lungo una strada remota e ha concluso che l'unica cosa che mancava era una chiesa, poi ne ha costruita una esattamente delle dimensioni che la congregazione doveva essere.
