Someone set a rock hammer point-down in loose scree, the way field geologists have always done when they need a photograph that means something later. The dark seam cutting across the pale rock face above is the whole reason for the trip, and the hammer is there so that whoever develops the roll of film can tell whether that seam is six inches wide or six feet, since rock formations have an unhelpful habit of photographing at no particular size at all.
In the 1950s this was standard practice for mapping expeditions and mining prospects alike, long before anyone carried a folding ruler as a matter of course. A hammer already lived in every geologist's hand, so it became the default yardstick, no additional equipment required and no risk of forgetting it in camp. The method assumed the reader would recognize a standard rock hammer on sight, which, at the time, most technically literate viewers did.
The scattered gravel and sparse grass pushing up between the stones tell you this slope had been picked over before, disturbed by foot traffic and small rockfalls rather than left untouched. Nobody in the photograph explains what the dark seam is. The hammer was left to do the only job it was ever meant to do here, and it did it without complaint.
