The sign promises 'Complete and Interesting' sightseeing, which is the kind of claim a tour operator can make when there is no truth-in-advertising board checking his work. Colee's Tours ran its little striped-canopy tram right past the entrance to the Fountain of Youth attraction, the stone gate behind it lit up with the word 'youth' in a script clearly not installed by anyone worried about subtlety. Tourists in 1950s St. Augustine came for the same reason tourists always came here: a Spanish explorer supposedly looked for eternal youth in this exact patch of Florida, and four centuries later a family could pay admission to stand near where he allegedly didn't find it.
The tram itself is doing the real work of the postwar Florida vacation industry, hauling sunburned families from one paid attraction to the next along a route someone had clearly optimized down to the minute. A driver waits to be signaled into motion, which was the polite mid-century way of saying the tour ran on nobody's schedule but the guests', at least in theory. Everyone aboard looks entirely unbothered by the fact that the yacht pier mentioned on the sign was, at that point, mostly a landmark you drove past rather than a destination in itself.
Somewhere off to the side a child in a straw hat lingers near the ivy-covered gatepost, unsupervised in the specific way 1950s children were allowed to be near tourist attractions, on the general theory that nothing bad happened at a Fountain of Youth. It hadn't yet occurred to the tourism industry that a themed archaeological park and a sightseeing tram company could be the same business wearing two hats. Ponce de León, wherever he ended up, would have appreciated the marketing more than the outcome.
The historian's note
St. Augustine, Florida, promoted itself through the 1950s as the nation's oldest city, and its tourist economy leaned heavily on the legend that Juan Ponce de León had searched the area for a fountain of eternal youth during his 1513 expedition. The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, developed as a commercial attraction beginning in the early twentieth century, capitalized on this legend with a spring-fed well, planted gardens, and a formal entrance gate of the kind shown here.
Colee's Tours was one of several sightseeing companies operating small open-air trams and buses through St. Augustine's historic district during this period, ferrying visitors between attractions such as the Fountain of Youth, the old city gate, the Castillo de San Marcos, and the municipal yacht pier along Matanzas Bay. These tram tours were a standard feature of Florida's postwar automobile-tourism boom, when family vacations increasingly followed packaged, ticketed circuits of roadside and historic attractions rather than open-ended sightseeing.
The scene reflects the routine machinery of mid-century American heritage tourism: a commercial attraction built around a colonial-era legend, serviced by a private tour operator whose business depended on convincing visitors that history could be seen efficiently and on a schedule.
