The 1970s presented a peculiar challenge: how to build efficient roads for new cars without entirely demolishing the millennia-old stone structures people inexplicably continued to visit. Here, traffic signals stood ready to manage automotive progress directly in front of the Worms Cathedral.
Pedestrians, having perfected the art of walking, navigated pavements, their attention fixed on their destination or the changing traffic light, rather than the massive Romanesque towers that had dominated the skyline since roughly the year 1000. History was just scenery to be driven or walked past.
The blue saloon, a triumph of contemporary automotive design, waited patiently. Its driver understood the precise timing required to proceed through the intersection, a skill considered more immediately useful than, say, understanding the nuances of medieval ecclesiastical politics.
The historian's note
This image captures a street scene in Worms, Germany, during the 1970s, featuring the prominent Dom St. Peter (Worms Cathedral). The cathedral is a prime example of Romanesque architecture, with its construction dating back to the early 11th century, although it underwent significant rebuilding and additions over subsequent centuries.
Known as one of Germany's Imperial Cathedrals, it played a crucial role in the Holy Roman Empire and was the site of the Diet of Worms in 1521, where Martin Luther famously refused to recant his views. The photograph shows modern urban infrastructure, including traffic lights and automobiles, integrated into a city shaped by centuries of history, illustrating the juxtaposition of historical preservation and contemporary life.
The visible street sign for "Stephansgasse" helps to pinpoint the specific location within the city of Worms, near the cathedral's eastern side.
