A woman in a blue suit has stopped in front of a roped-off exhibit at what is almost certainly a world's fair, where a large cream-and-yellow concept vehicle — ungainly, angular, bristling with fins and latticed superstructure — sits on a raised platform as evidence of where transportation was definitively headed. A girl in a full skirt consults a program beside her, and a small child in a plaid coat stands close enough to touch the rope but knows not to. Every major industrial nation spent the 1950s building enormous machines to demonstrate the future, then cordoned them off so no one could sit in them. The woman holds a pamphlet explaining, in confident declarative sentences, exactly how people would be traveling by 1975.
