She has clearly been asked to sit for the camera mid-task, and she has compromised by perching on the edge of something soft while holding a cigarette like a prop she is not sure what to do with. The domestic backdrop does the real talking: a portable sewing machine on its own little table, a basket meant for yarn or laundry, a sideboard stacked with the week's magazines waiting to be read and never quite finished. This is a woman who ran a household in the era when running one meant mending, organising, and being interrupted by a husband with a camera.
The frosted silver hair and the sharp red shift dress suggest she dressed up even for an evening at home, because in the 1960s a woman photographed indoors was still expected to look like she meant it. The half-full glass on the low table and the open pack of cigarettes complete the picture of an ordinary domestic evening that someone, for reasons lost to history, decided was worth using a flashbulb on.
She is smiling the specific smile of someone who has been told to smile, aimed at a lens that will not be developed or seen by her for who knows how long. The room is otherwise doing nothing remarkable, which is precisely why it survives as evidence of how remarkably unremarkable everyday 1960s domestic life actually looked.
