She has done everything right for this snapshot: the hair is set and sprayed into the loose bouffant that beauty parlours were selling by the pound in this decade, the cat-eye glasses are the kind meant to look intelligent and a little dangerous, and the smile is aimed square at the lens with the confidence of someone who has posed for a camera before. The squint suggests the sun is not cooperating, but in 1960s backyard photography the sun rarely did, and nobody waited for better light.

The baby has not agreed to any of this. Mouth open mid-thought, eyes drifting somewhere off to the side, she is dressed in a ruffled striped outfit that took someone considerable effort and that she will spit up on within the hour. This was the standard arrangement of the era: the adult supplies the composure, the infant supplies the chaos, and the photograph splits the difference.

Behind them a utility pole and a sloped rooftop anchor the scene firmly in a modest residential yard, the kind of unremarkable suburban plot that nobody photographed on purpose but that ended up in thousands of family slide carousels anyway. It is not a place; it is a backdrop that happened to be standing there when someone said hold still.
