Somebody pulled the car over because the field was too good to drive past. This was the great amateur pastime of the 1950s: color slide film had just made it possible for ordinary people to record a superbloom in the actual gold and violet it deserved, and a lot of them did, with more enthusiasm than technique.
The blur running sideways through the frame says the photographer was shooting handheld into a stiff breeze, or simply couldn't hold still long enough for the slow color film of the day to catch a windblown poppy. Nobody at the time would have called this a failure. A field like this, seen once a year if the rain cooperated, was worth a slightly ruined slide, because the alternative was no record at all.
What survives is less a photograph of poppies than a photograph of trying to keep up with them, which is probably the more honest picture anyway.
The historian's note
California's native wildflower displays, dominated by the state flower, the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), draw crowds each spring in years of adequate winter rainfall. Roadside wildflower viewing became a popular recreational activity for American motorists in the postwar decades, aided by expanding highway access to rural and semi-arid regions.
Color transparency film, widely adopted by amateur photographers through the 1950s, made it practical for ordinary travelers to document such scenes in natural color for home projection, a novelty that shaped a generation's visual record of American landscapes.
The specific location of this bloom is not identifiable from the image, though the flower species and open grassland setting are consistent with California's interior valleys or coastal foothills.
