Somewhere off a desert highway a woman has pulled the car over and done what tourists in the 1960s were constitutionally unable to resist: pick the wildflowers, regardless of what any sign might have said about it. She holds a small handful of yellow composites and pale phlox low against her hip, half-hidden, in the universal posture of someone who suspects the gesture is faintly illegal and plans to enjoy it anyway.
The jacket doing the real talking here is a heavily beaded, tailored blue wool blazer, the kind of good travel clothes a woman packed for a road trip when air travel was still an occasion and car trips were dressed for nearly as seriously. Beadwork like that was not meant to survive scrambling around gravel and creosote bush, which is precisely why it is being worn to do exactly that. A second hand enters the frame at her side, a wedding ring visible, suggesting this was a shared excursion narrated later as 'the day we stopped for the flowers.'
No one in 1960s roadside America thought to photograph the flowers themselves without a hand holding them, because the point was never botanical. The picture exists to prove she was there, she stopped, and she got the flowers before anyone in the car could suggest they were already running late.
