Someone, long ago, decided that nature needed to be neatly arranged into geometric shapes and placed around an imposing building. They believed this improved upon mere wilderness, and hired teams of people to maintain this vision, presumably because chaotic greenery was an affront to their organisational principles.

Decades later, the trees have grown taller than originally intended, providing strategic shade across pathways where visitors, reduced to tiny specs, wander through a perfectly orchestrated scene. Each trimmed hedge and carefully placed cypress represents an ancient declaration that humans are, in fact, in charge here.

The image depicts the gardens of Villa Medici in Rome, Italy, captured sometime in the 1970s. This prominent Renaissance villa and its expansive gardens were constructed for Ferdinando de' Medici in the late 16th century, designed by Bartolomeo Ammanati. The gardens were conceived as an integral part of the villa's grandeur, featuring formal parterres, antique sculptures, and commanding views over the city.

Since 1803, Villa Medici has housed the French Academy in Rome, providing a residency for French artists, scholars, and scientists. This institution continues the villa's legacy as a centre for artistic and intellectual exchange, maintaining the historical integrity of its architecture and landscape.

The formal design of the gardens reflects the prevailing aesthetic ideals of the Renaissance, emphasising order, symmetry, and human mastery over nature, a style that continues to be preserved and appreciated today.
