Somebody in the 1960s decided this old house needed a proper iron fence, the kind with pointed finials that says keep off more politely than a sign ever could. The fence is newer than the house by about two centuries, which was the style of historic preservation at the time: rope off the past, mow the grass around it, and hope visitors understand the difference between a home and an exhibit.

The red clapboard structure with its centre chimney and small-paned windows belongs to the saltbox tradition that colonial builders favoured for keeping heat in and taxes down, since a lower rear roofline sometimes meant a lower assessment. By the 1960s such houses had mostly stopped being lived in and started being toured, their furniture rearranged for maximum instructional value rather than comfort.

A lean-to roof frame crowds the right edge of the frame, the sort of utility structure that never made it into any painting because nobody thought to preserve the boring parts of history. The tree in the foreground has grown up entirely indifferent to all this curatorial effort, doing what trees do while humans argue about authenticity behind it.
