Someone decided this was the moment for a family picture, which meant grabbing whichever children were nearest and hoping stillness would follow. It did not. The little girl in the gingham-and-white dress has one hand braced on a bare adult knee and the look of someone about to launch herself somewhere else entirely, while the boy beside her has retreated into the reliable comfort of his own knuckle.
The wallpaper behind them, printed with a repeating stand of trees, was the kind of pastoral fantasy 1960s homeowners hung on interior walls precisely because they had no actual trees worth looking at. The tufted couch was built for durability rather than softness, on the assumption that furniture, like children, should be able to withstand years of abuse without complaint.
Nobody asked the boy to stop chewing on his hand, and nobody managed to get the girl to sit still, which is exactly why the picture survives as evidence rather than as posed decoration. It is not a portrait so much as a brief cease-fire, caught on its way to failing.
