A domestic turkey, resplendent in its iridescent dark plumage, stands amongst fallen autumn leaves, performing its civic duty of looking important. Its wattles and snood, biological indicators of health and attractiveness to other turkeys, also serve as a reminder that some creatures are designed for specific, brief periods of peak performance.
In the background, out of focus, someone in bright teal trousers offers a glimpse into 1970s casual wear, perhaps a homeowner admiring their yard bird. The turkey, meanwhile, seems to be contemplating the seasonal cycle, or possibly just the next available seed, unaware of its eventual destiny as a holiday centrepiece.
It displays a level of confident self-regard often found in animals destined for a specific purpose, marching with a sense of innate dignity across a landscape that will soon be much colder. The entire scene captures a moment of poultry zen before the practicalities of the season set in.
The historian's note
The domestic turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a large species of fowl, native to North America, and is widely recognised for its cultural and culinary significance. It was first domesticated by indigenous peoples of Mexico thousands of years ago, long before European arrival. The species was then introduced to Europe in the 16th century and subsequently brought back to North America by European settlers.
By the 1970s, turkey production had become a significant agricultural industry, driven by demand for its meat, particularly around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Selective breeding over centuries has resulted in the larger, meatier birds commonly seen in domestic settings, differing considerably from their wild ancestors.
This image captures a typical domestic turkey, likely in an outdoor, semi-free-range setting, reflecting common practices of the era where backyard poultry or small-scale farming was still prevalent in many suburban and rural areas.
