Somebody lined up three generations against the good wall panelling, the pink tongue-and-groove kind that a certain kind of 1960s household considered the height of finished-basement sophistication. The older woman in the lace blouse and cat-eye glasses has the settled posture of someone who has posed for a hundred of these and expects nothing from the camera except mild disappointment later. The young man between them wears the fixed almost-smile of a person told to hold still, which in this era could mean anywhere from three seconds to a full minute depending on the light.

The woman on the left is laughing at something outside the frame, the kind of unscripted moment a formal portrait was never supposed to allow, and she is paying for it now: an errant flare of yellow light has crept up the edge of the slide and is quietly eating her in half. Nobody at the party knew that would happen. Colour slide film had opinions about light leaks and stray reflections that only surfaced weeks later on a projector screen, long after the party had ended and the joke, whatever it was, had been forgotten.

That is the gamble of every roll from this decade: you dressed up, you smiled, you trusted the machine, and the machine had its own ideas about which parts of the evening deserved to survive.
