It seems that in some cities, the planning committee simply decided that rivers should be less like chaotic natural features and more like decorative civic amenities, complete with neat, green banks and a series of architecturally pleasing bridges. This required a certain amount of engineering over the centuries, but the residents of Strasbourg appear to have embraced the idea.
The grand buildings reflect dutifully in the canal's surface, as if participating in a collective civic agreement to enhance the overall aesthetic. People stroll and cars drive along the adjacent roads, seemingly oblivious to the centuries of effort that went into making their daily commute picturesque, a testament to the unacknowledged labour of past generations.
The entire scene projects an air of calm, established order, suggesting that some places simply achieve a permanent state of European charm and then continue to exist within it, decade after decade, without needing further explanation.
