Someone in Taxco built these alley walls before anyone thought to leave room for a photographer, and the 1960s traveller squeezing between them got exactly the shot the town's engineers never intended: a rough stone corridor funnelling straight to the pink baroque towers of Santa Prisca, as if the whole hillside had been arranged for a single vanishing point. Bougainvillea has colonised the gap between properties, doing the ordinary Mexican trick of turning a drainage problem into something postcard-worthy.

The town below tumbles down the slope in white and ochre roofs, silver-mining wealth long since converted into churches, courtyards, and real estate too steep for cars, which is precisely why alleys like this one still exist to be photographed. Nobody planned the view; the alley just happened to line up with the parish that the Borda family bankrolled two centuries earlier, and every tourist since has assumed the alignment was deliberate.

A junction box bolted crookedly to the left wall is the only concession to the twentieth century here, wired in with the confidence of a decade that believed electricity should go wherever it was needed and look however it looked.
