On the image
A tourist in the 1970s captures a memory inside what is objectively one of the largest and most ornate churches ever built. The blurry foreground figure smiles, perhaps not realising her head partially obscures a masterpiece of Baroque sculpture. This was a time when vacation photos were less about perfect composition and more about proving you were actually there.
The Baldachin, a colossal bronze structure designed by Bernini, looms behind her, its sheer scale meant to inspire awe. That particular effect is somewhat diminished by the casual snapshot approach, which prioritised a recognisable face over architectural grandeur, a common photographic strategy of the era.
People travelled across continents with bulky cameras and rolls of film, collecting tangible evidence of their experiences. The considerable effort involved in getting the film developed meant that simple photographic recording was often the primary goal, even if the resulting image was a bit out of focus.
The historian's note
St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, is depicted, specifically focusing on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's bronze Baldachin, installed above the high altar and St. Peter's tomb. This immense structure, completed in 1634, stands approximately 98 feet (30 metres) high and features Solomonic columns, a hallmark of Baroque design.
The photograph, dating to the 1970s, shows the basilica interior during a period of increased global tourism. International travel to major European landmarks like the Vatican became more accessible, leading to a rise in amateur photography within these historic and sacred sites.
Bernini's Baldachin is a pivotal work of Baroque art and architecture, symbolising the power and spiritual authority of the Catholic Church. Its complex sculptural details and innovative use of space were revolutionary for their time and profoundly influenced subsequent ecclesiastical art and monumental design.
