In the 1970s, people drove their large, reliable automobiles to designated spots like this paved overlook, pulling off the main road to briefly observe the wilderness. It was an important part of the travel experience, confirming one had successfully arrived at a pre-approved viewing location.

The landscape stretches for miles, a vast expanse of low scrub and distant mesas. This confirmed that America was a very big country, especially when viewed from a safe distance through a car window. The sheer scale was the point.

Stopping to appreciate the natural world often meant pulling over, perhaps getting out for a few moments to stretch, and then getting back in to continue driving. The goal was to see the place, not necessarily to interact with it.
