A blanket of new snow covers a suburban backyard in the 1970s, making visible the enduring strategy of parking vehicles wherever they happen to stop. That a car might be entirely covered by winter weather seemed an acceptable consequence of owning an automobile, rather than something to mitigate with carports or garages.
The stark, unadorned architecture of the nearby house and the expansive, flat lawn reflect a common mid-century notion of practical domesticity. One could simply let nature take its course with the landscaping, confident that spring would eventually sort out the details.
This tableau of winter dormancy suggests a common suburban experience where the outdoors became an unmanaged, cold expanse for several months of the year. The only human effort apparent is the decision to stay inside, which, in fairness, is often the most logical course of action.
