A group of modern humans stands at the base of a remarkably large, mostly reconstructed ancient Roman structure. They are admiring the work of previous generations who built it and more recent ones who put it back together, likely having travelled some distance to do so. The ancients built things for permanence, or at least for impressive collapse.
All those columns and archways once housed a gymnasium and baths, a place for physical exertion and cleanliness. Today, it mostly houses a deep sense of historical weight and a dusty area where one can stand and contemplate the past, or check the time on a watch. The grand scale indicates that leisure activities were taken very seriously, unlike modern fitness where people just wear Spandex.
It's an impressive testament to architectural ambition, resurrected with meticulous effort from scattered stones. The people gazing at it are part of a continuous, slightly puzzled human procession, always looking at old things and wondering if their own creations will last as long.
The historian's note
This image depicts the Marble Court of the Roman Bath-Gymnasium Complex at Sardis, Turkey, as it appeared in the 1970s. Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia and later an important provincial city under Roman rule.
The massive Bath-Gymnasium Complex, dating primarily from the 2nd century CE, was a central public facility for exercise, bathing, and social interaction. Its Marble Court, a grand, two-storey façade adorned with columns and sculptural elements, served as the formal entrance to the palaestra (exercise yard) within the gymnasium.
Extensive archaeological excavations and reconstruction efforts by the Harvard-Cornell expedition, which began in 1958 and continued through the 1970s, brought much of this monumental structure back to its impressive state. The work involved re-erecting fallen columns and consolidating remaining architectural elements, making it one of the most significant archaeological reconstructions of its kind.
