On the image

Well drilling in the 1970s was an endeavour where manual labour often complemented heavy machinery. Here, a shirtless man, covered in mud, diligently shovels drill cuttings from a slurry trough, a critical step in the process of convincing the earth to yield water.

His colleague, in full overalls and a hard hat, observes the operation with the stoicism of someone who has seen a lot of holes dug. The entire setup, a tangle of chains and pipes, operates on the principle that enough mechanical force, combined with human persistence, will eventually overcome geology.

This kind of outdoor work, performed under a relentless sun, instilled a particular kind of confidence in men who understood how to make things happen, even if "making things happen" sometimes meant just moving mud from one place to another until something wet appeared.

The process involves rotating a drill bit to cut through subsurface layers, with drilling fluid (often referred to as 'mud') circulated down the drill pipe and back up the annulus. This fluid carries rock cuttings to the surface, where they are collected in a trough, as seen in the foreground, before the fluid is often recycled. The men are engaged in the physically demanding aspects of managing the drilling process and handling the extracted material.

Such operations were fundamental for establishing self-sufficient water supplies for homes, farms, and small communities prior to widespread municipal infrastructure or more advanced drilling automation.
