On the image
A river carves its way through a vast canyon, a geological process that largely ignores human schedules or the specific decade it happens to be. In the 1970s, people were still figuring out if nature was something to be conquered, admired from a distance, or simply driven through on the way to something else.
A dirt path snakes down the canyon side, indicating that someone, at some point, felt a compelling need to reach the bottom without simply tumbling. It probably involved a four-wheel drive vehicle, a map printed on paper, and the unwavering conviction that this specific adventure was unique.
The canyon, meanwhile, appears to be operating on a timescale where "the 1970s" is just a brief atmospheric disturbance. It patiently awaits the inevitable erosion of both the path and most human assumptions about permanence.
The historian's note
This image captures a section of the Rio Grande Gorge in northern New Mexico. The gorge is an immense rift valley, carved by the Rio Grande over millions of years, exposing layers of volcanic rock within the Taos Plateau volcanic field.
The ecosystem within and around the gorge is characterised by high desert flora, including sagebrush and juniper, and supports diverse wildlife. The Rio Grande itself is a vital waterway for the region, recognised for its ecological value and recreational opportunities such as fishing and rafting.
In the 1970s, the area was appreciated for its dramatic scenery and outdoor activities. Parts of the Rio Grande Gorge have since gained federal protection, including designation as a National Wild and Scenic River and a National Monument, recognising its significant natural and cultural heritage.
