On the image

The mountain manages its vegetation with a clear, hierarchical system of ledges and outcroppings. Each shrub appears to know its place, rarely attempting to climb higher than its designated rock platform.

The sheer blue sky offers no particular feedback on this efficient organisational structure, presumably because it has its own, larger priorities that humans cannot comprehend. The 1970s were a time when people started thinking about nature a lot, often whilst driving through it in air-conditioned cars.

This particular incline represents an optimal balance between gravitational pull and the stubborn will of small green things to photosynthesise. It is a natural system designed for maximum survival with minimal effort, which explains why no human CEO has successfully replicated it.
