Someone decided a mountain was in the wrong place, or perhaps just had too much of itself to offer. Giant earthmoving equipment, the kind that drinks diesel by the barrel, was brought in to rectify this oversight. The sheer confidence required to tell a mountain it needs to move is quite something.
Here, a Lima hydraulic excavator sits ready for more work, dwarfed only by the scale of the task and the ambition of the engineers. The ground is a meticulously arranged chaos of gravel and rock, designed to support the next phase of this grand transformation project. It was the 1970s, and the world was being rearranged with little regard for its previous arrangement.
Power lines stretch across the scene, providing the energy for lights, communications, and perhaps the occasional coffee maker, because even reshaping mountains requires caffeine. The whole operation suggests a deep, unwavering belief that progress meant moving large quantities of solid matter from one point to another, usually with a lot of noise and dust.
The historian's note
This image documents a large-scale excavation or mining operation in a mountainous region during the 1970s. The scene features heavy civil engineering equipment, including a prominent Lima hydraulic excavator, indicative of major infrastructure or resource extraction projects common in this period. The terraced and cut mountain slopes illustrate significant landscape modification for construction purposes, likely for a road, dam, or open-pit mine.
The 1970s saw considerable expansion in global infrastructure and resource industries, often requiring extensive earthmoving capabilities. Companies like Lima Corporation were prominent manufacturers of the heavy machinery essential for these projects, designing robust equipment capable of operating in challenging terrains. The presence of power lines suggests a substantial, long-term operational base.
