A woman in a yellow robe stands at the threshold of a small modernist chapel or shrine, its entrance framed by a dramatic rust-orange arch and pierced-screen walls in geometric patterns that were meant to evoke tradition whilst announcing the arrival of the contemporary. Behind her rises a residential tower of institutional whiteness, fourteen storeys of identical small windows—the kind of public housing or apartment block that governments in the 1960s were building at scale, trusting that vertical living and rational planning would solve the housing shortage. The two structures sit in perfect compositional tension: the tower says efficiency and the future, the chapel says contemplation and continuity, and the photographer has caught them in a frame that asks whether a modern city had room for both. The woman, poised in the doorway, appears to be the answer the architect was hoping for.
The historian's note
The modernist chapel design with geometric lattice screening—often called jali or decorative perforations—became a common architectural vocabulary in 1960s India and South Asia, blending functionalism with regional craft traditions. The residential tower visible behind represents the era's enthusiasm for high-density urban renewal, when newly independent nations and state governments commissioned apartment blocks to house urban workers and displace slum populations. The architectural partnership of modernism and spiritual space reflected the period's belief that good design could serve all human needs simultaneously. The scale of the tower and the intimacy of the chapel doorway together document the fractured idealism of postwar urbanism.
