On the image
A large bull's head, all dark and gold, sits behind glass, likely in a museum sometime in the 1970s. Someone made this object to inspire awe, or perhaps to pour sacrificial liquids out of it, rituals which have largely fallen out of favour. Now its primary function is to be stared at by people who just want to feel cultured.
The background shows other patrons, vague shapes moving between blurred display cases and framed items. They are all engaged in the serious business of quiet appreciation, a shared public performance of respect for things that are very old and presumably very important. No one asks what the bull thinks of its new job.
This particular exhibit was designed to last for millennia, and here it is, doing exactly that, waiting patiently for the next generation of visitors to walk past and forget its specific historical context moments after reading the plaque. The value, apparently, is in the gazing.
The historian's note
This image depicts a Minoan Bull's Head Rhyton, a ceremonial vessel used for libations during rituals. Originating from ancient Crete, these artefacts are iconic examples of Minoan art and culture, often crafted from materials such as steatite with gilded wooden horns and inlaid eyes. Such rhyta were central to Minoan religious practices, where bulls held significant symbolic importance.
The most well-known examples, including the famous Taurus Head Rhyton, were discovered at major Minoan palatial sites. This piece, photographed in the 1970s, exemplifies the artistic sophistication and religious symbolism prevalent in the Minoan Bronze Age, which flourished from approximately 2700 to 1450 BC. Its display in a museum setting in the 20th century highlights its enduring historical and cultural value.
