Gordes, a historic village perched on a hillside in Provence, France, is depicted in this mid-20th-century photograph. Its prominent position, crowned by a medieval castle and church, served both protective and symbolic functions.
By the 1950s, Gordes was beginning to attract artists and a nascent tourism industry, though it maintained much of its rustic character before significant development in later decades. The village represents a classic example of a "village perché" (perched village), a common settlement pattern in southeastern France, designed for defence and to escape marshy lowlands.
