Someone with access to a small aircraft and a roll of colour film decided Rio de Janeiro's lagoon looked better from directly overhead, and for once the assumption paid off. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas curls into its famous near-oval below, the Atlantic beyond flattened by haze into almost the same pale blue as the sky, the way aerial postcard shots always blur the line between the two on purpose.
On the near shore a wooded hill still crowds right up to the water, its slopes crowded with small houses and steep footpaths - a community that city planners of the decade filed under temporary inconvenience rather than neighbourhood. Within a few years it would be cleared and handed over to a municipal park, on the theory that a lagoon photographs better without anyone poor living beside it.
The beachfront arc curving past the lagoon shows the grid of new apartment blocks that 1960s Rio was throwing up as fast as it could sell the units, each one marketed on a view that, from this altitude, everyone gets for free.
The historian's note
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is a saltwater lagoon in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Sul, connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow channel and ringed by the neighbourhoods of Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea, and Copacabana. By the 1960s the lagoon had become a defining feature of the city's postcard image, its shoreline increasingly built up with high-rise apartments as Rio's southern districts urbanised rapidly in the postwar decades.
The wooded hill pressing into the lagoon on the near shore is the site of the former Catacumba favela, a hillside settlement that stood on the lagoon's edge through the 1960s. In 1970 the community was forcibly removed under a citywide slum-clearance programme and the hill was converted into a municipal park, part of a broader effort by Rio's authorities to reshape the visual and social geography of the Zona Sul during this period.
