Someone built this palace on a mountain shelf near the Persian frontier assuming that a good defensive position and a lot of carved stone would guarantee permanence. The dome and minaret still stand in the middle distance, doing their best impression of authority, whilst the foreground is a maze of roofless chambers whose arches now frame nothing but weeds and daylight.
By the 1960s the palace had been abandoned long enough that no one bothered to fence off the older ruins in front of it, and a visitor could simply climb through a doorway that once meant something to somebody important. The empty road curving past the walls suggests the site had become a stop for the curious rather than a seat of power, which is generally how these things end.
Whoever built these fortified rooms clearly believed they were constructing something permanent for a family or a garrison that would need defending indefinitely. History disagreed, and left behind a very photogenic argument for humility.
