Someone stood at the seawall railing with a camera loaded for daylight and pointed it at the last blue light over the harbour anyway, the kind of decision 1950s amateur photographers made constantly and colour slide film forgave only sometimes. The result is a mooring field of small motor cruisers and one lone sailing boat, all riding at anchor with the patient indifference of boats that know the tide will still be there tomorrow. A promenade with iron railings runs along the shore, built in that era when cities still assumed citizens wanted a formal place to walk and admire their own harbour.

The boats themselves are not yachts. They are the modest, white-hulled family cruisers of a postwar middle class that had just discovered it could afford a weekend on the water, moored in loose rows because dock space, like everything else in the boom years, was suddenly in demand. Somewhere behind them a working waterfront of piers and low industrial buildings goes about its business, unbothered by the leisure fleet floating past its front door.

Whoever pressed the shutter got the mood right and the exposure wrong, catching a harbour already halfway into night. It is the kind of image that proves the camera was there before it proves much else, which was often enough for a Sunday evening in 1955.
